Doctor's New Release Debunks Prevailing Theories of Cholesterol’s Role in Heart Disease

Book by Ernest N. Curtis, M.D., Released by Dog Ear Publishing

The Cholesterol Delusion, published byDog Ear Publishing, traces the development of the Cholesterol Theory, Lipid Hypothesis and Diet-Heart Theory, pointing out where they are based on “faulty evidence and unscientific reasoning,” the author writes. The book goes even further, attacking the foundation of the “risk factor” paradigm that has dominated cardiovascular research as well as other medical research for decades. A glossary, appendices on how to read medical journal reports, and actual reports on a lipid research clinics trial and a heart study prove to be helpful tools in comprehending this complicated issue. This book, written for intelligent laymen, will open the eyes of anyone who has been told he has elevated levels of cholesterol that must be medically controlled.

6 Ways to Soothe Foot Pain

By Elaine Russell

Sometimes foot pain has an obvious cause, such as a fungal infection (athlete's foot), corns, a callus or an ingrown toenail.

But if the discomfort you feel stems simply from fatigue or poorly fitting shoes, your best friend may be water – warm or cold, with or without herbal extras – or an invigorating foot massage. If no one is willing to give you a foot massage then read on – here are some easy ways to give your feet a treat.

 Soak Your Feet

For a refreshing and stimulating treat for the feet, fill one basin with cold water and another with water as hot as you can comfortably stand. Sit in a comfortable chair, and place your feet in the cold water. After 5 minutes, switch to the hot water. Repeat. This "hydromassage” alternately dilates and constricts blood vessels in your feet, boosting circulation.

To pamper your feet with essential oils, fill a bowl with hot water and add 2 drops peppermint oil, along with four drops each of eucalyptus and rosemary oil. Soak for 10 minutes.

If you don’t have any essential oils at home, brew up a very strong cup of peppermint tea and add it to the water.

Soak your feet in a warm-water footbath spiked with half an ounce arnica tincture. The improved blood flow almost instantly results in less pain.

 Massage Your Feet

Buy a roller specially designed to massage the soles of the feet (available from health food shops). Or roll your bare feet over a tennis ball, golf ball or rolling pin for several minutes. To make a stimulating massage oil to soothe foot pain, combine 3 drops clove oil with 3 tablespoons sesame oil.
Mix the ingredients well and massage the oils into your aching feet. Another tried-and-true foot-rub recipe calls for 3 drops lavender oil, 1 drop camomile oil and 1 drop geranium oil mixed into 2 teaspoons olive oil.

 Wear Shoe Inserts

Shoe inserts, or orthotics, help relieve foot pain caused by flat feet or fallen arches. They’re available at medical-supply stores or from a podiatrist.

Give Your Feet a Workout

Scatter a few pencils on the floor, and pick them up with your toes. This little exercise helps relieve foot ache. Wrap a thick rubber band around all the toes on one foot. Spread your toes and hold the stretch for five seconds. Repeat ten times to relieve shoe-bound feet.

 Soothe Heel Pain

Heel pain, especially in the morning, may signal plantar fasciitis, an inflammation of the tough band of tissue that connects your heel bone to the base of your toes. To get relief, stretch the Achilles tendon. Stand about three feet from a wall. Place your hands on the wall, and move your right leg forward, knee bent. Keep your left leg straight, with your heel on the floor. You should feel a gentle stretch in your heel and foot arch. Hold for 10 seconds, then switch sides and repeat.

 Prevent Foot Pain

Apply a lotion containing urea, such as Eulactol heel balm, to rough spots before they turn into troublesome calluses. Start with a small amount, as urea-based lotions can sting.

Another way to prevent skin from toughening up is by soaking your feet in a bowl of warm water once a week. Afterwards, apply a moisturising lotion.

Also, choose shoes that fit well. You should have a thumb's width between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. Shoes should be wide enough so that your toes and the balls of your feet aren't cramped from side to side. But if shoes are too roomy, your feet will slide around and rub against the sides.

Brew Up a Cough Taming Tea

Sometimes things that feel good are actually good for you. A cup of hot tea can soothe your  throat  and tame your cough if you brew it with the right ingredients.

Thyme is an expectorant and also contains substances that relax the respiratory tract. To make thyme tea, place 2 tablespoons fresh thyme (1 tablespoon dried) in a cup of hot water. Allow it to steep, then drain out the herb, add honey if you like, and drink.
Sip a cup of marshmallow tea. When combined with water, marshmallow yields a gooey mucilage that coats the throat and also thins mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up. To make the tea, steep 2 teaspoons of the dried herb in one cup hot water. Have a total of three cups a day.
Add 45 drops of licorice tincture to a cup of hot water and sip. Licorice loosens phlegm and relaxes bronchial spasms. A caution: Don’t take licorice for more than a few weeks, as it can raise blood pressure.
Steep 2 teaspoons horehound leaves or flowers in 1 cup boiling water, strain, and drink.
Practitioners of Ayurveda, the traditional medicine of India, recommend a spice tea that you can drink several times a day. To make the tea, add a half-teaspoon powdered ginger and a pinch each of clove and cinnamon powder to a cupful of just-boiled water and drink.

Sandra Freer Book Review of: The “Dung Beetle Manager”

The “Dung Beetle Manager” by Scott W. Dunlap is a soft-covered book published by Outskirts Press Inc. October 26, 2009.
Dunlap uses the world of dung beetles to entertain readers in a humorous yet articulate manner to describe, metaphorically, the similar behaviour of business management. The book is aimed at coping strategies in business; in particular for the middle management - “The Workforce.”

"The workforce are those who are forced to eat dung, clean it, step in it, or get it thrown in their faces." The people who drop dung are called “Executives.” The lower or mid management are left to clean up after the executives with pressure from both sides.

Germs!

They're everywhere. Here are some simple strategies for protecting yourself while commuting, shopping, banking, or doing anything else that takes you out into public places.

Germ Warfare

“If anyone ever dares you to lick something in a [public] bathroom,” says Charles Gerba, “lick the women’s toilet seat. Almost half of women put paper down or wipe the seat before sitting.”

Gerba, a microbiologist, knows the toilet seats in women’s bathrooms are among the cleaner things in there. He has studied the most germ-infested surfaces in public places. Among the worst: bus rails/armrests, shopping carts, escalator handrails, water fountain handles, public phones and gym equipment.
