Misinformation fuels opposition to health-care reform in Canad

The reality is that for-profit provision of health-care services is commonplace among industrialized countries with universal health care

By Bacchus Barua
and Jason Clemens
The Fraser Institute
VANCOUVER, B.C. / Troy Media/ - For almost two decades, fear of a U.S.-style system has fuelled opposition to genuine reform of Canadian health care. Many of those same opposition voices are now protesting the constitutional challenge to Canada's health regulations by the former head of the Canadian Medical Association, Dr. Brian Day.
In reality, our health-care system is expensive, delivers poor-to-modest results, and fails to achieve many of its laudable aspirations. The solution to fixing and maintaining our universal health-care system is to recognize the successful approaches used in other universal-health care countries, such as the use of for-profit companies to deliver health-care services.
The Dr. Day case, which will likely end up in the Supreme Court of Canada, focuses on two aspects of British Columbia's health regulations: (1) prohibition against doctors working in both the public and private health-care systems, and (2) the disallowance of purchasing private insurance for core medical services.
Legal arguments aside, the context of the case is worth noting. Canada is one of the highest spenders, on both a per person basis and as a share of the economy, on health care among industrialized countries that provide universal health coverage. Yet Canadians endure some of the longest wait times for medically necessary procedures. For example, in 2015 Canadians waited 18.3 weeks between referral by a GP and actual treatment. Canadian patients also suffer from comparatively poor access to doctors and medical technologies such as MRIs.
But if the voices of opposition at the Dr. Day trial are to be believed, there's an incompatibility between medical care delivered by private, for-profit companies and universal health care.
The reality, however, doesn't match this rhetoric. A recent study looked at for-profit insurers and hospitals in six industrialized countries (Australia, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland) that all maintain universal health care.
For-profit hospitals are found in all six countries. In Germany, France and Switzerland, for instance, universally accessible hospital care is delivered by both non-profit and for-profit hospitals. In Australia and Sweden, governments contract with for-profit hospitals for universally accessible services.
For-profit health insurers are also found in all six countries. Notably, for-profit companies compete to offer the primary health-care insurance in the Netherlands, offer a private substitute for public health-care insurance in Germany, and offer a private option alongside the public system for patients in Australia and Sweden.
Remember, all six of these countries maintain universal health care.
But Canadians need not look beyond our own borders to see the benefits of private, for-profit provision of health services. Saskatchewan's Surgical Initiative (SSI) was introduced in 2010 with the express goal of reducing what were the country's longest wait times for medical treatment.
Under the SSI, select day surgeries were contracted out to private, for-profit clinics. A recent study by the former NDP finance minister of Saskatchewan, Prof. Janice MacKinnon, provided evidence that on average, private clinics delivered procedures at 26 per cent lower costs than public-sector equivalents. For example, in 2012, Regina Surgical Centres Inc. provided cataract surgeries at $618 per procedure compared to $1,273 in public hospitals in the Regina Qu'Appelle regional health authority.
The results in Saskatchewan have been stunning. The province has gone from having some of the longest wait times, on average, for medical treatment to having the shortest. The government's own wait time data indicates a decline of 75 per cent in the number of patients waiting three months or longer for surgery.
The reality is that for-profit provision of health-care services is commonplace among industrialized countries with universal health care. Canada is actually the oddity in limiting - and in some cases, actually prohibiting - such activities. Hopefully the Dr. Day case, if nothing else, will bring these important reform lessons to light for Canadians.

Marketplace Chaplains Addressing Millennial Surge in Workplace with Innovative Ways

Marketplace Chaplains Addressing Millennial Surge in Workplace with Innovative Ways

With millennials continuing their demographic surge in the American workplace, Marketplace Chaplains, America’s largest and original workplace chaplaincy organization, is introducing new programs and familiar work/life balance methods to meet the needs of the younger working generation.
A recent PriceWaterhouse survey1 titled, “Millennials at work: Reshaping the workplace,” states today’s younger workers are looking for work/life balance over increasing pay, something many companies are addressing by adding Marketplace Chaplains to their roster of employee services.

“This generation are committed to their personal learning and development and this remains their first choice benefit from employers. In second place they want flexible working hours. Cash bonuses come in at a surprising third place,”1 the report released early this year states as one of its key findings.
That’s exactly one of the reasons millennial-dominated VHA Corporation in California chose to partner with Marketplace Chaplains more than five years ago. Visionary CEO Vincent Huang and his brother Jimmy Huang were looking for ways to help their employees, mainly in the age range of 22 to 35. “Our Marketplace Chaplains have demonstrated high value for our team members. The service they provide is such a help to us,” Jimmy Huang said.

The reseller of wireless communications says, “Having the voluntary, confidential, on-site chaplain program has been a big help to our employees. Our company was voted ‘The best place to work for,’ by L.A. Business Journal for four years straight and our Chaplain care team plays a major part of it,” Huang added.
Taylor Bledsoe, 32, poised to oversee family metal bleacher business, Sturdisteel, in the near future values having chaplains who are capable of dealing with a younger workforce.
“Millennials communicate in different ways and may have different issues than employees of the past, so you always have to be flexible to address them, which is one thing I think our chaplains do very well.”
One recent adaptation from Marketplace Chaplains is the new mobile app MyChap which allows employers and employees to message their workplace chaplains for any issue or request a visit. “It is a very cool way to call your chaplain whenever you need them,” Bledsoe said. Additional resources pertaining to a myriad of life issues are also available by category for users of the exclusive app.
Larry Neilson of Neilson Marketing, another California millennial company, noted that plugged-in chaplains are a perfect fit for his plugged-in company.
According to the PwC Study, some millennials don’t feel the promises of employers are being met which is why they are looking for new places to work. “Millennials are looking for a good work/life balance and strong diversity policies but feel that their employers have failed to deliver on their expectations. 28% said that the work/life balance was worse than they had expected before joining,”1 the PwC report stated.
“Employees of all ages, will always need help from time-time-to-time to process and deal with life’s ups and downs, whether issues at home, or on the job. Marketplace Chaplains will be there to offer hope and  help with resources they need. Visionary leaders implement this level of care as a cultural, strategic initiative for their diverse, multi-generational staff,” said Marketplace Chaplains Executive President and CEO Doug Fagerstrom.
Marketplace Chaplains currently serves more than 630,000 company employees and their family members in 46 states, 9 provinces, 1,232 cities, 4 international countries and 1 commonwealth.

For more information on this unique employee benefit which has been featured in Marketplace Chaplains on CNN, NBC Nightly News, and in the Washington Post, the New York Times and Bloomberg BusinessWeek, visit http://www.mchapusa.com.

Hit the Road During the Niagara Wine Festival

Celebrate the grape harvest with a tour through wine country
NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ont. — When it comes to Ontario wine country, the arrival of September can only mean one thing — it’s Niagara Wine Festival time!
While the vast majority of wineries of the Niagara Peninsula are open all year long, and many participate in various events throughout the year, it is during the Festival that the industry puts on its best face to celebrate the grape harvest and the incredible wines that get their start in vineyards across the region. For wine lovers, it the ideal time to get out and experience what Niagara wine country has to offer and discover some hidden gems.
“There is so much going on during the Niagara Wine Festival that it can be quite easy to get lost or overwhelmed by everything that is going on,” says Sommelier Marcel Morgenstern, Sales Manager at Niagara-on-the-Lake’s PondView Estate Winery. “But it is still a great time to make new discoveries at Niagara wineries. There is nothing quite like trying new wines and old favourites in the quaint setting of a winery amid the vines.”

Montebello Park in downtown St. Catharines may be the heart of the Wine Festival, but most, if not all, of the wineries in the park are only offering a portion of their wine roster. Likewise, you can’t get everything a winery offers at the liquor store.
When planning your tour through wine country during the Niagara Wine Festival, Marcel offers a few important tips to make your trip more enjoyable:
·         Plan your transportation. First and foremost, make sure you have a driver. A couple of samples at this winery and a few samples at that winery can add up, and you don’t want to be drinking and driving.

·         Plan your route. Gas is expensive. Wine Country Ontario’s Wine Route Planner can help you prepare a logical route that will prevent backtracking and zig zagging throughout the Peninsula.
·         Plan around events. Many Niagara wineries will have special events during the Wine Festival. On Sept. 17th, PondView will be hosting a Harvest Party, with a wine bar, delicious food, their famous wine slushies and live entertainment by Sandy Vine and the Midnights. Admission is free, and food and wine packages are available.
·         Plan for your purchases. Simply tossing your purchases into the trunk of your car is a good way to end up with broken bottles. Bring along a cooler or two (recommend using frozen gel packs as opposed to ice cubes) or simply ask for an empty box from the first winery you visit.
·         Plan refreshments and sustenance. At some point in your tour, you will want to grab a bite to eat. And no matter what part of Niagara wine country you are touring, you are likely to pass by a fantastic local restaurant serving up a chef-inspired menu that is unparalleled. Or simply make your self some sandwiches before you leave and put them in your cooler. It is also wise to bring along some water or other soft drinks to help cleanse your palate between winery visits.
·         Plan to have fun and learn some new things. A tour of wineries is a chance to open yourself to new flavour experiences. Look down the sample menus for wines you haven’t tried before, or go to a winery you have never visited and try their version of your favourite varietal. You may be surprised by what you discover!
“By all means, your Niagara Wine Festival must include a few hours in Montebello sampling different wines, trying new foods, listening to live music and enjoying the sunshine,” says Marcel. “But it should also include a stop at more than a couple of wineries for a more diverse, and intimate, wine tasting experience.”

Fast-Growing Manufacturer of Dietary Supplements Expands on the Heels of Receiving a Good Manufacturing Practice Certification from NSF

-- JW Nutritional, a fast-growing
contract manufacturer of dietary supplements, functional foods, and pet
nutrition, announced today the grand opening of its new
manufacturing facility in Plano. The facility
will be dedicated almost exclusively to the production
of the company's protein powders. Production will begin later this month.

"This is an exciting milestone for us, as we now boast over
130,000 square feet of
space with the addition of our new facility,"
 said Jesse Windrix, President and
founder of JW Nutritional. "We're now able to bring
 our customers the same service
with their protein products that they were
already receiving from us out of our
capsule and tablet facility."

Since 2004, JW Nutritional has offered turnkey product
 development with formula
R&D, ingredient-sourcing, packaging, label design,
 and fulfillment. The company
is led by Windrix, along with Nathan Hewitt, Vice President,
 Joshua Smith, Chief
Engineer, and Dragos Alevizache, Director of Quality.

The news of the company's expansion comes on the heels of
 its receipt of a third
party Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification
from NSF, one of the strictest
and most prestigious third party certifying bodies in the
 nutritional industry. The
certification is a necessity for industry leaders,
especially following an
announcement that GNC, the nutritional retail giant,
will no longer accept products
produced outside of third party inspected facilities
after December 31st , 2016.

"Obtaining our NSF certificate shows our continued push
 for quality and affirms,
beyond any doubt, that our products are fully compliant
 with all regulatory
requirements," said Alevizache. "We operate our facility
as if we are in a glass
building, open for anyone to look in and see just how
their products are being
made."

The leadership team will be discussing JW Nutritional's
success, as well as
challenges facing the supplement industry in July on
"Worldwide Business with Kathy
Ireland®." The segment, which will air on Fox Business
 Network as sponsored
programming and Bloomberg International, will mark the
leadership team's national
television debut.

#mybodyis Campaign Set to Change the Way Women View Their Bodies

Embodied State of Mind launches the #mybodyis campaign (August 29, 2016
– October 8, 2016) to promote and celebrate diversity of real women in
our society; because every body is a beautiful body.

New York, NY, August 29, 2016 --(PR.com)-- Surveys indicate
that 87% of US women(1), which equates to a staggering 109 million women(2),
are unhappy with their body. Only 4% of women(3) consider themselves beautiful.
It is clear that in a society where so much emphasis is placed on body image, there i
s something fundamentally wrong and harmful about the way most women
view their body. Accepting body dissatisfaction as a normal part of life is
not a solution, and the #mybodyis campaign is set to change the way
 women view their body.

The #mybodyis campaign celebrates diversity of real women in our society
and brings positive back to how we view our bodies for the better. It sheds
negative descriptors and focuses on the incredible qualities our bodies exhibit.
Wearing each perceived flaw or imperfection as a badge of true beauty
and basking in the positive features that makes our bodies simply amazing.

The #mybodyis campaign encourages women of all ages, sizes and
background to take part in the body positive conversations online
(http://mybodyis.net/) by completing the #mybodyis… sentence with
a positive one-word descriptor, uploading a candid photo of themselves
and sharing a personal body changing story. The aim is to encourage
real women to join the conversation about having a healthy body image
and inspire other women to change their mindset with the help of their
 positive perceptive and journeys.

New York #mybodyis free events include: Let’s Have A Body Positive
Conversation gatherings; Change Your Mindset – Special #mybodyis
Workshops; How to Take body Positive Selfies; Body Positive Outdoor
Meditation, and a variety of Focus Groups. The end of the campaign
will be marked by a celebration in Central Park on October 8th.
