Change with caution: how to help keep your baby’s nursery germ free

Change with caution: how to help keep your baby’s nursery germ free
Get the dirt on and out of your child’s room
TORONTO, November, 2010 – Every parent wants to keep their new bundle of joy healthy and happy.  Sometimes though, it’s the stuff you can’t see that can cause harm.  Germs and bacteria from changing soiled diapers can contaminate your baby’s nursery, but there are ways to ensure you keep your baby healthy and happy.
“Moms know that germs can live everywhere and are easily transferred from dirty diapers to baby’s skin and throughout the house,” says Helen Kargas, Senior Brand Manager, Playtex Infant.  “One of the best ways to keep the nursery clean is by cleaning diligently and disposing of diapers in a hygienic and safe fashion using a diaper disposal system.”
Diaper do-dos
An average baby goes through six to eight diapers a day[1]. Multiply that by two years and that equals more than 4,000 dirty diapers before a baby’s second birthday.  That means there are 4,000 opportunities to transfer germs from your baby’s diaper to their new skin.
To help prevent the spread of germs, Diaper Genie® brand diaper pails offer the following tips to new parents and veteran moms alike to keep their child’s room healthy and germ free[2]:
·       Target germs where they live – change table, laundry hamper, floors and toys.  Make disinfecting these items part of your daily chores
·       Keep messes (and germs) to a minimum when changing dirty diapers:
o       Establish a quick and easy diaper changing routine, and keep supplies handy and close
o       Create a dedicated changing area that can be easily cleaned and disinfected
o       Take extra care to handle diapers from the outside surfaces and avoid touching waste
·       Don’t throw that poopy diaper in the trash bin just yet! Get rid of diapers in a more hygienic fashion that keeps germs sealed away in a hands free diaper disposal system such as a Diaper Genie II Elite™ disposal system. It seals odour into the pail and out of your nursery, unlike an ordinary trashcan and plastic bag
·       Keep baby bottles away from germ hot spots and only handle the bottle when your hands are clean
·       Keep a special hamper inside the nursery to use specifically for heavily soiled baby laundry.  Ensure soiled clothes are washed in hot water and dried in the hot dryer cycle
·       Keep soap and warm water, or where soap and water are not available, antibacterial hand wipes, nearby to use after changing your baby in the nursery.  This will help stop the spread of germs within the nursery
“As a mom, I understand the importance of keeping my baby healthy and happy while trying to manage all the hundreds of new responsibilities that come with motherhood,” says Kargas.  “The Diaper Genie diaper pail helps mom by keeping germs and bacteria from dirty diapers, not to mention odour, locked in and away from the baby’s home – the nursery.  And the easy to use foot pedal allows for hands-free opening without having to bend down.”
