Impress the Gardeners on your List...

Impress the Gardeners on your List...
Anyone who cultivates a garden has likely also developed a disdain for the critters that invade their vegetables, potted flowers, lawn or pond.  Cats, raccoons, deer, squirrels, skunks, rabbits, herons, and even bears can be a scourge to those who have invested time and money to create the ideal backyard oasis or vegetable patch.

Impress the gardeners on your holiday list with these innovative garden products:

ScareCrow motion-activated animal deterrent
The ScareCrow helps gardeners protect their valuable garden investments.  It detects movement within a 1200 square feet area and releases a short, startling burst of water that scares animals away.

It is humane, environmentally-friendly, and hooks up easily to a garden hose.

Change with caution: how to help keep your baby’s nursery germ free

Change with caution: how to help keep your baby’s nursery germ free
Get the dirt on and out of your child’s room
TORONTO, November, 2010 – Every parent wants to keep their new bundle of joy healthy and happy.  Sometimes though, it’s the stuff you can’t see that can cause harm.  Germs and bacteria from changing soiled diapers can contaminate your baby’s nursery, but there are ways to ensure you keep your baby healthy and happy.
“Moms know that germs can live everywhere and are easily transferred from dirty diapers to baby’s skin and throughout the house,” says Helen Kargas, Senior Brand Manager, Playtex Infant.  “One of the best ways to keep the nursery clean is by cleaning diligently and disposing of diapers in a hygienic and safe fashion using a diaper disposal system.”
Diaper do-dos
An average baby goes through six to eight diapers a day[1]. Multiply that by two years and that equals more than 4,000 dirty diapers before a baby’s second birthday.  That means there are 4,000 opportunities to transfer germs from your baby’s diaper to their new skin.
To help prevent the spread of germs, Diaper Genie® brand diaper pails offer the following tips to new parents and veteran moms alike to keep their child’s room healthy and germ free[2]:
·       Target germs where they live – change table, laundry hamper, floors and toys.  Make disinfecting these items part of your daily chores
·       Keep messes (and germs) to a minimum when changing dirty diapers:
o       Establish a quick and easy diaper changing routine, and keep supplies handy and close
o       Create a dedicated changing area that can be easily cleaned and disinfected
o       Take extra care to handle diapers from the outside surfaces and avoid touching waste
·       Don’t throw that poopy diaper in the trash bin just yet! Get rid of diapers in a more hygienic fashion that keeps germs sealed away in a hands free diaper disposal system such as a Diaper Genie II Elite™ disposal system. It seals odour into the pail and out of your nursery, unlike an ordinary trashcan and plastic bag
·       Keep baby bottles away from germ hot spots and only handle the bottle when your hands are clean
·       Keep a special hamper inside the nursery to use specifically for heavily soiled baby laundry.  Ensure soiled clothes are washed in hot water and dried in the hot dryer cycle
·       Keep soap and warm water, or where soap and water are not available, antibacterial hand wipes, nearby to use after changing your baby in the nursery.  This will help stop the spread of germs within the nursery
“As a mom, I understand the importance of keeping my baby healthy and happy while trying to manage all the hundreds of new responsibilities that come with motherhood,” says Kargas.  “The Diaper Genie diaper pail helps mom by keeping germs and bacteria from dirty diapers, not to mention odour, locked in and away from the baby’s home – the nursery.  And the easy to use foot pedal allows for hands-free opening without having to bend down.”
About Diaper Genie®
The Diaper Genie® system double-locked pail design and multi-layer refill seals in odour and germs and the antimicrobial protection inhibits the growth of odour-causing bacteria and is the number one selling diaper pail for ultimate odour control.  The system, along with foot pedal, means moms don’t need to bend down and allows for easy, hands-free handling.  Diaper Genie® II and Diaper Genie II Elite™ diaper pails are available at major department stores across Canada and sell for a suggested retail price of $35.99 and $45.99

4 Tips for Healthy Nails

4 Tips for Healthy Nails

By Elaine Russell

1. Eliminate Nail Fungus

To fight stubborn nail fungus, try tea-tree oil. A powerful antiseptic, it can help to make nail fungus disappear. In fact, in one study it proved to be as effective as a prescription antifungal medicine. Once or twice a day, apply a drop or two to the discoloured nail. A good time to do it is after your bath or shower, when your skin is softest. If your feet are sweaty when you get home, change into a fresh pair of socks straight away. And if you have an office job, take along a pair of clean socks – especially on hot summer days – so you can change before you start work. Another way to prevent fungus is to avoid clipping your cuticles. When you do this, you remove your nail's protective barrier. Fungi and bacteria find it easier to get a grip around the base of the nail after the cuticle has been removed. Instead, gently push them back.

2. Make Your Nails Stronger

Take 300 mcg of biotin, a B vitamin (also known as vitamin H), three times a day with food. Long ago, vets learned that this vitamin could strengthen horses' hooves, and hooves are made primarily from keratin, the same material that makes up human nails. If your nails are weak or brittle, biotin might be all you need to strengthen and thicken them. However, it doesn't work instantly. You'll need to take this treatment for six months or more before you will see a noticeable difference. Food sources of biotin include barley, nuts, rice and soya. You can alsp try drinking a cup of horsetail or nettle tea once a day. They are both high in silica and other minerals that nails need to grow. Both are sold loose or as tea bags in health food shops.

3. Eat for Healthier Nails

If your nails are brittle or flaking, try getting more essential fatty acids. These are found in foods such as oily fish (trout, sardines and salmon) and flaxseeds or flaxseed oil. If you don't eat much fish, take 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil a day (use it in place of other oil in salad dressing) or sprinkle freshly ground flaxseeds on your cereal or other foods such as salads. Evening primrose oil is another source of essential fatty acids. Take 1000 mg three times a day with meals. If your nails have white spots, you may be deficient in zinc. Increase your dietary intake of zinc by eating beef, pork, liver, poultry (especially the dark meat), eggs and seafood. It's also found in cheese, beans, nuts and wheatgerm.

4. Moisturize and Protect Your Nails

For dry, brittle nails, rub petroleum jelly or a thick cream into your nails to hold moisture around and under your nails. If you do this at bedtime, slip a pair of thin cotton gloves on your hands before you to sleep.
Wear vinyl gloves every time you wash dishes or do other household tasks that require you to immerse your hands in water. (Vinyl is best, because people with nail problems tend to have skin that is sensitive to rubber.) And avoid polish removers that contain acetone or formaldehyde. They're terribly drying to nails. Use acetate-based removers instead.

Obesity – From Bad to Worse

Obesity – From Bad to Worse

Just as I thought that things could not get any worse and obesity, the number health problem in American today, is getting (somewhat) under control, a new study came out which burst my bubble.
According to Organization for Economics and Development, 3 out of 4 Americans are expected to become obese by 2020. Franco Sassi, senior health economist for OECD, who wrote the report said:
“Food is much cheaper than in the past, in particular food that is not particularly healthy, and people are changing their lifestyles, they have less time to prepare meals and are eating out more in restaurants..”
Nothing new really.
If there’s truth in that study, then in 9 years, 75% of Americans will be obese. Let’s think for a minute what the consequences of these numbers are:
1.  We will pay more for healthcare – If you thought you are paying too much for our healthcare system now, can you imagine what it will be in ten years?
2. We will die sooner – The life span of an obese person is, give or take, 8-10 years LESS of a normal-weight person
3. We’ll damage the environment even further – because when we weigh more, it takes more fuel to keep us going, the environment pays.
4. We harm our children – rates of children obesity and diabetes will increase as well.
Sad isn’t it?

Herb Pull–Apart Rolls

Herb Pull–Apart Rolls

In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water and add pinch of fructose. Let stand until bubbles around the edges; about 10 minutes. Stir in 1/4 cup melted coconut oil and 2 cups flour, fructose, salt, thyme, oregano and dill and mix for about 1 minute. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until dough has pulled together. Remove dough and lightly oil the bowl with about 1 tablespoon of olive oil, place the dough in the bowl, and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and put in a warm place to rise until doubled in volume (about 1 hour).
Punch the dough down and remove it from the bowl and place on floured surface. Roll the dough into a small to medium disk. Cut in 6 equal wedges. Divide each wedge into six smaller pieces (36 total). Grease a muffin tin with olive oil. Roll each piece into a small ball and place 3 balls in each section of a muffin tin.
Set aside and let rise for about 45 minutes or until they have doubled in size. Brush each top with olive oil. Bake at 400° for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Makes 12 rolls. Serving size 1 roll.

Hyundai Shoots its Most Efficient Ad Campaign Ever

Hyundai Shoots its Most Efficient Ad Campaign Ever

Lights, camera, action….pollution? Beyond the glitz and the glam, the TV shows and commercials Canadians loves most have major, but rarely discussed, environmental impacts. Electricity and water use, travel, onsite generators and waste disposal are just a few culprits.

Hyundai recently shot three television commercials with a 96% reduction in carbon emissions and a 97% reduction in garbage when compared to typical shoots.  From using human-powered pulleys to banning water bottles on set, no measure was spared for producing the company’s most efficient ad campaign ever. The commercials shot for the Sonata Turbo, Tuscon and Sonata Hybrid take the efficiencies of the cars themselves to the small screen. Part of Hyundai’s new “Live Smart” philosophy, these commercials reveal Hyundai’s commitment to becoming not only a world leader in fuel economy, but a more responsible corporate citizen.

During the August 22-25 shoot at a parking lot in downtown Toronto, the consumption of resources was strictly regulated and all waste was monitored, sorted and measured. As a result, the team was able to calculate the shoot produced a total of 0.35 metric tonnes of CO2 and 45 kg of garbage. For comparison, the company estimates a traditional shoot would have produced approximately 8.93 metric tonnes of CO2 and 1,524 kg of garbage.

The reduced figures were achieved by filming three commercials all at one location, utilizing solar and wind power generators, LED and low-power lighting, local-sourced food for the crew and an innovative set design that simulated moving vehicles and landscapes through bicycle generators and hand cranks. The crew of 80 also tracked their transportation to-and-from the set, utilizing car pooling, public transit, bicycles and sidewalks whenever possible.

“There are no smoke-and-mirrors here,” said John Vernile, Vice President of Marketing at Hyundai Canada. “We made a concerted, holistic effort to find the most efficient way to shoot a commercial that significantly reduced our ecological impact. Frankly, there aren’t too many commercials shot with this level of efficiency and limited environmental impact, let alone three.”

“The inspiration for this campaign came directly from the efficiencies of the cars we were tasked to advertise,” commented Gary Westgate, Executive Creative Director of Innocean Canada. “Hyundai’s aim is to become a global leader in fuel economy, so we wanted to step-up our game and deliver our services in a new, more efficient way.”

To achieve the goal of developing three carbon-neutral commercials, Innocean Canada brought-in Lauren Gropper, a LEED Accredited Professional Sustainability Consultant. Originally from Vancouver, Gropper has worked throughout North America on residential and commercial buildings in Environmental Planning and Design.  Gropper organized the shoot from a green perspective, sourcing the required resources, working with the crew and advising on set design, building, tear-down and disposal.

While the shoot was partially powered by solar, wind and manpower, additional power needs were supplied by clean diesel generators right-sized for the anticipated energy requirements. By employing exhaust scrubbers, the generators produced 35-40 percent fewer emissions. Other ecological choices were enforced through outright bans. For example, water bottles were forbidden on the set, saving an estimated 4,800 plastic water bottles.  In their stead, reusable bottles were brought-in by the crew.

Added Vernile: “This is another step in Hyundai’s efforts to be a more responsible corporate citizen. We’ve learned a lot through this process and we’re looking forward to applying these lessons to future marketing projects.”

Interestingly, the stars of the commercials – the vehicles – were noticeably silent for the full four days.  By using human-powered pulleys, treadmills and cranks, the crew was able to simulate vehicle motion by spinning the vehicles’ wheels and by rotating a canvas of static images for background scenery.  All of the set materials were either donated or recycled.

“Each commercial looks as though the car is moving under its own power when, in fact, it’s the background that’s doing most of the work,” Vernile said. “We went back to the early days of film making for lessons in how to help trick the camera.  We think Canadians are going to be surprised with what we were able to do.”

The commercials were for the Sonata Turbo, Tucson and Sonata Hybrid and will run on national Canadian television networks from mid-September until late November.

“The Sonata Turbo, Hybrid and Tucson were developed for the global market,” said Keith McDevitt, Senior Vice President, Innocean Canada Worldwide. “So we wanted to maintain a global perspective on the ecological impact during the development of this campaign. By aggressively minimizing our C02 production and limiting waste, I believe we found a way to achieve our goal.”

The videos – and the making of – can also be viewed on the company’s dedicated YouTube page (www.youtube.com/hyundailivesmart) that went live on October 1, 2010. For every 600 visitors to the YouTube page, Hyundai will purchase one metric ton of carbon offsets.

British Columbians Join Landmark Health Study

If you’re a B.C. resident between the ages of 40 to 69 years, the BC Cancer Agency wants you to be part of the largest health research project in Canadian history.

BC Generations Project explores factors leading to cancer, other diseases

The BC Generations Project was launched last year as part of a national study to recruit and follow 300,000 Canadians over the next 20 to 30 years. BC Cancer Agency researchers want to investigate how a person’s environment, lifestyle and genes contribute to cancer and other chronic diseases, like heart disease and stroke, so they can learn more about prevention for the benefit of future generations.

Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and the Atlantic provinces are also taking part, and similar large-scale, long-term studies are being conducted in the UK and other countries.

“It’s a huge opportunity for the current generation to do something for future generations,” says Richard Gallagher, the BC Generations Project principal investigator and senior scientist in the BC Cancer Agency’s cancer control research program. “This could help protect your children or your children’s children, from getting cancer or chronic disease.”

Anyone within the 40 to 69 year age range is encouraged to participate, Gallagher says, regardless of whether they are healthy or have health problems or disabilities.

The BC Generations Project was first offered in the Lower Mainland – now it’s based online, so residents from anywhere in the province can participate.

All you have to do is request a questionnaire, which is available by phone at 604-675-8221; toll free at 1-877-675-8221; by email at bcgenerationsproject@bccrc.ca or online at http://www.bcgenerationsproject.ca/.

So far, more than 6,500 British Columbians have signed up. Many endorse the project’s focus on disease prevention; others say they want to contribute to cancer research.

BC Cancer Foundation donors share this motivation and are providing funding support to the project. It’s another example of how the Foundation, which is the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency, serves as the bridge to connect philanthropy to cancer research for the benefit of all British Columbians.

As one participant said, “Why not? My wife of 43 years is alive because of medical research and advancements.”

The BC Cancer Foundation is the bridge that connects philanthropic support and research breakthroughs in cancer knowledge. As the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency and the largest charitable funder of cancer research in this province, we enable donors to make contributions to leading-edge research that have a direct impact on improvements to cancer care for patients in British Columbia. We fund with the goal of finding solutions.

As an independent charitable organization, we raise funds exclusively for the BC Cancer Agency to support innovative cancer research and compassionate enhancements to patient care.

Kimberly-Clark Introduces Kleenex Hand Towels

Kimberly-Clark Introduces Kleenex Hand Towels

Innovative Solution Offers Convenient, Hygienic Alternative to Cloth Bathroom Hand Towels

TORONTO,  - Kimberly-Clark Corporation (NYSE:KMB) today announced the Canadian launch of Kleenex Hand Towels - an innovative solution that delivers one clean, fresh, dry towel every time people wash their hands in the home bathroom. The single-use, disposable bathroom hand towel from the Kleenex brand provides Canadians with a unique new product that addresses their growing concern with hand hygiene and is a means to help maintain their families' health and wellness.

Health Canada recommends avoiding using common hand towels after hand washing to minimize risk and further protect you and your family[i]. Careful hand washing is one defense against germs, but hands are only as clean as the towel used to dry them. Here are some facts every Canadian should know:

· Even if a cloth hand towel is not visibly dirty, it does not mean it is clean.

· Regular washing of cloth bathroom hand towels does not ensure clean hands.

· Hand drying with disposable towels can help prevent the spread of germs.

"The Kleenex brand created the facial tissue category more than 80 years ago by offering consumers a replacement for cloth handkerchiefs,” said Gordon Knapp, president, Kimberly-Clark North Atlantic Family Care. “Building on that legacy of innovation and leadership, the brand is now delivering an alternative solution to cloth bathroom hand towels with Kleenex Hand Towels."

Kleenex Hand Towels are designed to address an unmet need. The product's unique, Cottony-Soft base sheet is free of inks, dyes and fragrances and highly absorbent - drying hands effectively, with enough capacity in the brand's proprietary, absorbent Dry-Touch fibers for secondary quick clean-ups around the bathroom sink. Kleenex Hand Towels' flexible packaging complements bathroom décor and space limitations, allowing the product to be placed on a towel bar or countertop. The Pop-Up delivery system always keeps one clean, fresh towel conveniently at hand.

Kleenex Hand Towels will are available at major Canadian retail locations at a suggested retail price of $3.49 for a box of 60 towels. For more information about Kleenex Hand Towels visit www.kleenex.com.

About the Kleenex Brand

The world's first facial tissue, Kleenex brand is recognized by families in more than 150 countries. Invented in 1924, Kleenex brand facial tissues were initially marketed as a sanitary way to remove cold cream and makeup. Once advertising was shifted to emphasize the product's use as a disposable handkerchief, however, sales soared. Always the innovative leader, Kleenex brand facial tissue has met the unmet needs of consumers for more than 80 years with products that provide the essential and uplifting touch that makes life better.

Foods that Encourage Weight Loss

Are you tired of fad diets and exhausting yourself with exercise? It can often seem like no matter how little we eat, we just can't seem to lose as much weight as we want. The key to losing weight isn't by eating a little and exercising a lot. Yes, exercise is important, but you can't starve yourself and expect your body to cope with the energy that exercising demands. That's why we've put together this article about foods that are good for weight loss.

Veggies, Anyone?

You've probably heard that fruit and vegetables can help you lose weight. Well, it's true--with one addition: eat them RAW to lose even more weight. Fruits and vegetables give you nutrients whether you eat them raw or cooked, however they are naturally more complex in their raw state. When you eat raw F&V, your body has to work just a little bit harder--using more energy!--simply to perform the digestive process. So the next time you're feeling a little hungry, just nip into the kitchen and grab some fruit or put together a veggie medley. Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, tomatoes (I know, it's a fruit), and celery are easy to handle in a raw state, so consider starting with those!

Fat: Meat Your Match!

Although red meat is healthy in moderation (say one serving two or three times a week), studies by the American Cancer society have shown that eating too much red meat can cause a person to be 30 - 40% more likely to develop cancer in the colon or rectal regions. Plus, red meat isn't considered a "lean" meat. Try to incorporate more turkey and chicken--UNfried, of course--into your meals. They are good sources of protein that will kick up your metabolism a notch. Canned tuna (in brine), salmon, and eggs are also meats to add to your "good" list.

Oats and Rice and Grains... Oh My!

Foods that are high in fiber are a great way to lose weight. In addition to making you feel fuller for a longer period of time, high-fiber foods also keep your bowel movements regular. I know—it's not very nice to think about, but you'll notice a huge difference in your energy levels which means you'll have plenty of "juice" for exercising. Some high-fiber foods include: bran cereal, whole wheat bread, brown rice, prunes, pears, pinto and kidney beans, and dried figs.

Now that you have a better idea about the foods that will encourage weight loss, you can work on incorporating them into your diet. Don't forget that while eating healthy is the first step to ensure that you aren't taking in too many extra calories, a good level of activity is imperative to help shed the weight you already have. Good luck and best of health!
