The bookshelf is free and includes shortcuts for downloading applications of this beloved character. The apps educate and entertain little ones in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

"Doki’s Bookshelf" — available in the App Store beginning today — will make it possible to download apps that cost between US$1.99 and US$3.99. Included on the list is the newly-released “Doki Explores Space”, both the interactive book and activity book versions, which teach principles of astronomy and show children, always in a fun and playful way, interesting facts and information about Earth and the solar system.

Once the bookshelf is downloaded, the user will not only gain access to new apps, but will also receive the interactive book “Doki Explores the Ocean”, a top seller across Latin America in the Education category of the App Store’s purchased applications.1 With intuitive and easy-to-use navigation, this app uses entertaining activities and games to teach about life at the bottom of the sea.
Other new apps coming soon to the portal include: “Doki ABC”, with content that aids in learning to read and write; “Doki 123”, about the world of math; and “Doki Sports”, about the importance of being physically active and presenting popular children's sports options of today.  All are available for iOS 5 or higher.

Twenty-six Directors. Twenty-six Ways to Die

VSC presents
The ABCs of Death

ONE NIGHT ONLY
Thursday May 23, 2013
as part of the Sinister Cinema series
25 Cineplex theatres across the country

Directors Kaare Andrews, Jason Eisner, and actress Kyra Zagorsky
are available for interviews by phone or email.

– Video Services Corp (VSC) presents the horror anthology The ABCs of Death screening as part of the newly formed and extremely popular series, Sinister Cinema, Thursday May 23.

Paper Magazine called ABC’s of Death "Sesame Street for psychopaths", and it was the closing night picture at TIFF 2013’s Midnight Madness. It will be screening in 25 Cineplex Theatres across the country as part of Raven Banner and the chain’s Front Row Centre specialty series.

“V is for Vagitus" segment actress Kyra Zagorsky will be in attendance at the May 23 screening at the Cineplex International Village in Vancouver.

“V is for Vagitus” segment director Kaare Andrews is available for interviews.

“Y is for Youngbuck” director Jason Eisner is also available for interviews.

The ABC’s of Death is perhaps the most ambitious anthology film ever conceived, with productions spanning 15 countries and featuring segments directed by over two dozen of the world's leading talents in contemporary genre film. Inspired by children’s educational books, the motion picture is comprised of 26 individual chapters; each helmed by a different director assigned a letter of the alphabet. The directors were then given free rein in choosing a word to create a story involving death. Provocative, shocking, funny and ultimately confrontational, The ABC’s of Death is the definitive vision of modern horror diversity.

The directors include Marcel Sarmiento (Deadgirl), Andrew Traucki (The Reef), Ti West (The House of the Devil), Jon Schnepp (TV's "Metalocalypse"), and Jason Eisner (Hobo With a Shotgun).

"We're excited to have our first of hopefully many films included in the Sinister Cinema program." Declared VSC President Jonathan Gross. "We're confident that The ABCs of Death will satisfy genre fans and we're thrilled to have this opportunity to bring the film to fans across the country."

Tickets for the May 23 presentation are available now at participating theatre box offices and online at cineplex.com/sinistercinema. For a complete list of participating theatres: cineplex.com/Events/Sinistercinema/ParticipatingTheatres.

Sweet Potato & Curried Red Lentil Pizza

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup (180 mL) dry red lentils
  • 1½ cups water
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • ½ small eggplant, diced
  • 1 lb sweet potato, cubed
  • 1 can Italian Style diced tomatoes, un-drained
  • 1 tsp. ground ginger
  • 1½ tsp. curry powder
  • 1½ tbsp. ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 (12 inch) thin prebaked whole wheat pizza crust
  • ¼ cup grated Romano cheese

Directions

  • Combine the lentils and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, then cover and simmer over low heat for about 20 minutes, or until tender. Drain, and set aside.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Spray a pizza pan with non-stick cooking spray.
  • Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Stir in garlic and onion; cook until soft and slightly browned. Stir in eggplant and sweet potato. Pour about ½ cup of liquid from canned tomatoes. Simmer until juices are absorbed.
  • Stir in tomatoes, ginger, curry powder, cumin, salt and pepper; simmer until sweet potato begins to soften, about 15 to 20 minutes. (If juices cook off before potatoes are fully cooked, stir in a small amount of water, and cover.)
  • Place pizza crust on pizza pan. Spread the lentils evenly across the surface of the crust out to the edges. Spread sweet potato mixture evenly on top, and sprinkle with cheese.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until the edges are browned, about 10 to 13 minutes.

WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE -Proper Secrets

Proper Secrets
By Rachel Francis
WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE
-- New Book Promotes Reason and Respect in Relationships

In Proper Secrets by author Rachel Francis, Emily Worthing is a strong-minded, practical country lady, determined to stay unwed in an effort to protect her independence. But Emily’s resolve is challenged when she meets the charming and aristocratic Elijah Wingrave.
Proper Secrets is both a homage to Jane Austen and a comment on the virtue of balancing emotion with common sense,” Francis says. “I wanted to create a sensible heroine, one somewhat like Elizabeth Bennet, who could illustrate the pitfalls of prejudice and the value of love rooted in trust.”
When the Wingraves move into Reddester Hall, Emily and the Worthings find themselves growing attached to a family that won't allow anyone close enough to uncover the secrets they’ve tried to leave behind. The Wingraves' troubles follow them to Tripton when Jude Annesley appears. Rife with depravity and disorder, Annesley is unable to fool Emily with his false charm. He plots a course of revenge that will strip away all pretenses, leaving none of the Wingraves’ secrets intact.
Proper Secrets is not a traditional historical romance. It’s set in an “alternate Europe,” and though it’s reminiscent of the Regency England period, Francis takes liberties with many of the factual aspects of the book. She plays with the geography, the social climate and mores, current events, and technology available at the time.

“I wanted to create a new environment, one that could help me express the themes that are central to Proper Secrets,” Francis continues. “My experience with the military helped me develop this world. An alternate Europe, especially one that featured England at war, would not have come across as genuine without the knowledge I gained while living on the Camp Pendleton military base.”
Proper Secrets is character-driven fiction with an important message centered on truth, consequence, and love. It explores themes that will resonate with today’s readers, including:
  • Importance of balancing romance and reason in relationships
  • Complexities of family and shielding the secrets of “one of your own”
  • The difficulty of forgoing love when it’s unhealthy or unwise
  • How shaming each other for past sexual behavior creates animosity between men and women
“Today’s unrealistic view of love often encourages people to do not what is best for them, but the complete opposite. Women try to emulate the relationships of couples like Bella and Edward and make themselves miserable in the process,” adds Francis. “Emily learns that while it’s difficult to choose not to indulge in a fantastic, unstable love, it motivates Elijah to grow as a person and overcome their barriers by doing the right thing.”

Proper Secrets is Francis’ second novel. It’s available in paperback ($14.99) and eBook ($4.99)

Omega-3 Myths Debunked

Top 10 reasons to take fish oil supplements:

Naturopath, Dr. Brenda Watson points out that
“more than 7,000 studies on omega-3 fatty acids
seem to support the fact that virtually everyone
should be using fish oils on a daily basis because
the body cannot produce it on its own. More
information can be obtained at renewlife.ca, but
take a look at Dr. Watson’s Top 10 reasons for
taking an omega-3 supplement.

• Arthritis and Inflammatory Conditions
The powerful anti-inflammatory properties of
omega-3 oils from fish help reduce stiffness in joints and help relieve joint and muscle
pain.
• Attention Deficit Disorder and Memory
Recent research reveals that omega-3s, specifically DHA, help increase focus and
memory retention in children and adults.
• Cholesterol, Blood Pressure & Heart Disease
Omega-3 oils promote healthy cholesterol levels in the body by helping to lower bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels and raise good cholesterol (HDL) levels. Clinical research also
reveals reductions in blood pressure with the intake of omega-3 fatty acids.
• Depression and Mood Regulation
Regular supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids helps to elevate mood and lessen
depression and anxiety. High potency fish oil with added vitamin D is very useful in
treating seasonal affective disorder or the “winter blues”.
• Digestive System Health
Regular omega-3 supplementation helps to soothe and lubricate the bowel, ease
elimination and support overall digestive health.
• Healthy Eyes
Fish oil supplements reduce the risk of age related vision problems including macular
degeneration. The DHA found in fish oil is important for the visual development in
infants.
• Diabetes
Fish oil can help to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce risk of cardiovascular disease.
• Improved Brain Function in Babies
Pregnant women who took a high quality fish oil supplement had babies with higher IQs
and fewer learning disorders, and were less likely to develop mental retardation or
cognitive delays.

• Skin disorders
The Journal of Lipid Research announced in 2005 that a few benefits of fish oil regarding
skin condition are oil production regulation, increased hydration, reduced acne and fewer
wrinkles.
• Weight Loss
Studies show that fat loss benefits of fish oil combined with diet and exercise were
significantly greater than diet and exercise alone.
Dr. Brenda Watson is a New York Times bestselling author, and the host of the PBS
health show “The Heart of Perfect Health”.
